The Stubnitz is one of the longest protected nature zones of Germany.
Provocation of the nature conservation in the Stubnitz was the endangering of the unique countryside in the beginning of the 20th century due to planned digging of chalk at the coast. What followed was that the Stubnitz was set under protection through an edict by the local police on March 17th 1929. A second edict for protection of the Jasmund area was decreed on August 27th 1935. 1954, when the first law on nature conservation of the GDR has been passed, the edict of 1935 was re-enacted.
Despite its status as a nature protection area, the Stubnitz was subjected to an increasing burden. The question rather to expand the protection of the whole Stubnitz or not has always been considered. In late autumn 1989, after the political change in the GDR, the idea of creating a national park could be pursued and realised within the national park program.
