Our path to a sustainable future We take responsibility further.

Sustainability is part of our DNA

For us, sustainability is not a trend, but a principle. As a non-profit organisation in the heart of the national park and embedded in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, we are committed to a future fit for grandchildren - ecologically, socially and economically responsible. This is not just about the resource-conserving operation of the centre, but about an attitude that runs through all areas of our work: from educational work and visitor management to purchasing, mobility and energy.

Our measures at a glance

  • Energy self-sufficient operation using solar and geothermal energy in a closed cooling/heating circuit
  • Heat pumps instead of fossil fuelled heating sources

  • Recommendation & promotion of sustainable travel by train, bus & bike
  • Cooperation with Fahrtziel Natur & the VVR

  • Cooperation with regional, fair and social suppliers
  • Reusable instead of disposable in as many areas as possible

  • Permanent CO₂ reduction in building operation and use of energy-saving elements
  • Environmentally friendly building materials right from the start

  • Communication of sustainability as a cross-cutting theme in all exhibitions & guided tours
  • Preparation for all age groups and educational levels as well as for people with disabilities

Goals & outlook - We keep moving

Sustainability is a process - we regularly evaluate our impact and continuously work on improvements. To do this, we use the quality guide of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tourism Association (MV-T), which helps us to recognise strengths and develop new potential in a targeted manner.

The next steps are

  • Further development of the barrier-free offer
  • Energy optimisation and increasing the degree of self-sufficiency
  • Mobility options for visitors with a minimised CO₂ footprint when travelling here
